This is an all-gay (LGBTQ+) cruise that will include being in A Coruña, Spain on August 12 in the path of totality for the total eclipse of the sun, and Bonnie (Total Eclipse of the Heart) Tyler will be on board. In addition to ~2500 gay men, our friends Wayne & David will will also be on the cruise and about 16 cabins down from ours on deck 10!

September 22		 Swansea, MA The Crows Nest (VRBO) Jet Blue Bob and I traveled with my sister and her husband to celebrate our aunt’s 90th birthday on Friday and to enjoy Saturday afternoon drinking and eating at our cousin’s house, who hosted a lot of our still-living first cousins, several of whom we haven’t seen in over 50 years.
October 9 –
October 16		 Cabo San Lucas, Mexico David & Wayne’s place American Airlines This was a postponed, so long-awaited, trip that was originally scheduled for April, and we were excited to finally “make it happen.” Bob and I spent a fun week with our good (and generous!) friends David & Wayne, who own a place there. We ate a lot of good food, celebrated my 67th birthday while we were there, played lots of Catch Phrase and Just One, and had a few cocktails.

Sail date was on a Friday and on the Monday right before it, someone had to drop out, and they put their cabin up for auction. Bob and I were the highest bidders, and off we went. For the Bahamas port call, we spent the day at Bimini Beach, which is Virgin Voyages’ private beach club there.

Comfort Suites (Cincinnati)		 Road trip! We drove to Cincinnati to attend a memorial service for Bob’s first cousin once removed, Robert C. MacVeigh, who actually died back in March. We went a couple of days early and spent 2 day in Frankfort, KY, where we did three bourbon distillery tours: Four Roses, Woodford Reserve, & Buffalo Trace.
August 28 –
August 31		 Battle Creek, MI Hampton Inn Road trip! Bob and his brother Charley and Charley’s wife Barbara drove to Michigan to meet up with another brother, Tommy, for a few days. Tommy was in a high-school-reunion-related golf tournament in which his brother Charley and another brother, Joe, who lives in Battle Creek, participated. Bob doesn’t golf, so he just went along for the family time.

 Boston, MA YOTEL Boston Delta Airlines I worked as a session monitor at Red Hat Summit 2017, Red Hat‘s annual conference, held in the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, and Bob joined me on this trip and just hung out in Boston while I worked.
May 26-28 Surf City, NC Patti Boyle’s beach rental Drove We stayed with Patti for a few days in a place she was renting. Julie Merricks, Sue Hauser, Dee Lutz, Elizabeth Brownrigg, Connie Hobbs, & Michele Van Note also visited during that time.
July 2-7 Pittsburgh, PA Joe Chason’s house Delta Airlines John visited with Joe.
September 4-7 Key West, Florida The Island House Delta Airlines A clothing-optional, gay men’s resort (website can be NSFW). Bob and I both went and Joe met us there on the second day.
October 9-13 Providence, RI Hotel Dolce Villa United Airlines + rental car John flew up for his cousin’s wedding.
December 4-5 New York City, NY Holiday Inn Manhattan – Financial District Delta Airlines John surprised Bob with tickets to the Broadway show The Tina Turner Musical. It was a whirlwind trip. We flew up to NYC the morning of the (8 PM) show and flew back the next day in the late afternoon. It was Bob’s first Broadway show.

 New Orleans, LA Wyndham Hotel French Quarter AirTran I attended Southern Decadence, which is sort of the gay version of Mardi Gras in NOLA. I have several blog entries about the trip, starting with this one.

October 17-18

 Washington, DC Comfort Inn Downtown DC / Convention Center Drove Bob and I attended the wedding of Terry McGovern and Michael Carter (our then-friends from line dancing). It was a wonderful event, about which I blogged.

December 26-29

 Orlando, FL Patti Boyle’s house Drove Bob and I and Frances and Vincent (Bob’s Cocker Spaniels) visited (and I met) Patti Boyle, one of Bob’s life-long friends and from whom he has adopted most of his dogs, including Frances and Vincent.

 Jacksonville, NC Day trip Drove We celebrated Mom’s 80th birthday in Jacksonville at Tony’s Seafood & Oyster Bar. Vivian and Jeff brought a birthday cake that had a bingo card on it. Robert Shumaker, Chris, Meagan, Nick, & Ethan were also there. I blogged about the day.

June 21-23

 Myrtle Beach, SC Legends Golf Resort Drove I visited Pam, Tara, & Ryan at their beach house for a few days. Rene wasn’t there. We had dinner one night at the Tilted Kilt, which was in the news 3 days later with the headlines: “Tilted Kilt, Twin Peaks making ‘breastaurants’ the hot new trend in dining.” In retrospect, after Ryan came out, it’s funny that we ate a “titty place” with two women and two gay men. I wrote a blog entry about it, which includes a shot of some typical Tilted Kilt servers (none of which was ours) who put the “breast” in “breastaurant.”

July 9-12

 Put-In-Bay, OH Put-In-Bay Resort Hotel & Conference Center US Airways I flew to Pittsburgh, where I met Joe, and we drove to Port Clinton, where we took the ferry to Put-In-Bay to join Joe’s family gathering there. The group included: Joe’s sister Kathy and her husband Al, Joe’s sister Pat and her husband John, Joe’s sister Mary, and their cousin Cindy. Non-family members (beside me) who where there were Kathy’s friend Cathy and her husband. All of us spend a decent amount of time bellying up to the bar. My favorite part of the 3 days was Joe’s an my bike ride around the island. (I don’t know why most of the pictures in the blog entries from those 3 days are sideways.)

September 30 – October 6

 Seattle, WA Casey Peel’s apartment;
Red Lion Inn		 American Airlines My friend Jen Riehle MacFarland and I visited and stayed with my friend Casey Peel for 3 days, and then we moved into the host hotel for the SIGDOC Conference we attended, which Sarah Egan Warren also attended. While I was there, I also had lunch with Kevin Reinstein & Eric Bulson who lived in Seattle at the time. I blogged the week starting with this first day’s entry.

October 11-14

 New York City On W. 99th St., at the home of my friends, Paul Carey & Juan Carlos Fernández American Airlines This was my 55th birthday trip to see Barbra Streisand in concert at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. On the 11th, my gracious hosts “showed me the city” as residents only know it, on the 12th, I saw Jake Gyllenhaal staring in If there is… I haven’t found it yet, and on the 13th, I saw Barbra’s concert.

 Key West, FL The Island House Delta Airlines The highlight of this stay was running into Joe Jervis, the author of the Joe. My. God blog, of whom I was a fanboy at the time. I blogged about meeting one of my intellectual crushes.”
